PGK 2025 France Excursion Highlights: Annot Basin, Southern French Alps

Earlier this summer, the PGK Excursion to the Annot Basin, Southern Alps, France led by Renaud Bouroullec and assisted by Richard Porter offered a valuable opportunity to explore the region’s geology.

We wanted to take time to reflect and share what we learned. Day 1 began with a drive along the Var River, a braided system flowing from the southern Alps to the Mediterranean. Our first stop was lunch with a panoramic view over the Annot Sub-basin, setting the tone for the trip. We then walked closer to examine the Braux outcrop—a well-exposed road cut revealing thin- and thick-bedded sandstones, along with sedimentary structures such as grooves and flutes that helped us interpret paleoflow directions.

Later, we followed winding roads through the Gorge de Daluis, where red sandstone beds of the Permian Cians Formation are exposed. The final outcrop of the day offered a glimpse of Day 2: a clear view of the unconformity between the Permian and Triassic units.
