At the end of summer 2026, the PGK travelled to Cyprus to observe excellent quality exposures of the Troodos ophiolite, as well as the overlying sediments. With Anouk Beniest (VU) and Richard Wessels (UU) as our excursion guides, we navigated our way upward through the mantle, sheeted dykes, pillow basalts and lastly the umbers at the top of the oceanic lithosphere. Subsequently we also looked at the overlying sedimentary sequence, followed by an integration of the various pieces of information into a coherent story regarding the development of the Troodos ophiolite and, thereby, Cyprus as a whole.
Apart from geology, the rich cultural history of Cyprus was explored as well. Amongst others, we visited the Kourion archeological site, where we saw well-preserved mosaics of Achilles and gladiators as well as an amphitheatre. And, of course, a crucial hydration break at a local winery allowed us to gather our thoughts and review everything we had learned, further cultivating our newly acquired geological knowledge.
Overall, this was another amazing field trip filled with excellent geology, archeology, and, last but not least, an amazing group of people with whom to enjoy this excursion to Cyprus. We look forward to seeing you on the future excursions of the PGK!
