Seismic Interpretation Advances 10 Years On: Where Are We Now?

In this presentation, Stéphane Gesbert will speak about;

Seismic interpretation technology has advanced dramatically over the past two decades, with the aim to extract “more geology from seismic data.”  At Shell, much of this development was driven by the ambition to systematically identify and de-risk stratigraphic traps, although the resulting workflows proved applicable across a much broader range of exploration challenges.

A decade ago, workflows combining multi-horizon interpretation, stratigraphic and AVO attributes, interactive seismic sculpting and stratal slicing were already well established at Shell. Since then, Artificial Intelligence notwithstanding, the pace of innovation has been more evolutionary than revolutionary, but no less impactful. Advances in computing power, visualization, interactivity, and perfected workflows allow our geoscientists to screen ever larger datasets while extracting more geology and geophysics from seismic data.

In this presentation, we will revisit the seismic interpretation game changers discussed at a PGK meeting in 2017 and assess how the technology has matured over the last decade. Through a series of examples, we will showcase spectacular seismic geomorphology and discuss the strengths and limitations of modern interpretation workflows. Time and logistics permitting, we’ll throw in an interactive quiz and a live demonstration.

About the speaker

Stéphane Gesbert is a principal geophysicist at Shell with experience in seismic processing, imaging, interpretation, and quantitative interpretation. He holds degrees in Applied Physics from Paris VII University and engineering from the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris. During his career, he contributed to the development of seismic interpretation technologies and supported exploration and appraisal activities across Shell’s portfolio. He is also active in mentoring, training, and technical knowledge sharing.
