Monthly Lecture & Annual General Meeting
Pierre-olivier Bruna (TU Delft) will talk about:
Making the Invisible Visible: Predicting structural heterogeneities for a safe and sustainable future.
Abstract
My PGK presentation will introduce briefly my background, my vision and the department I belong to at TU Delft (Geoscience and Engineering). I will then develop the four ongoing projects I have with my research group. These projects focus on fracture network simplification, identification of the flow signature of natural fracture networks, impact of robust structural models on the prediction of geological heterogeneities and development of innovative exploration toolkits to accelerate the deployment of new geothermal projects in Europe. This part of the presentation will describe initially how these topics are classically approached in the community and will propose alternative workflows to tackle these issues.
About the presenter
Pierre-Olivier Bruna is a field and subsurface structural geologist. He obtained his PhD in carbonate geology in 2013 in Marseille. Pierre-Olivier then moved to Australia for three years as a project geologist for the Northern Territory Geological Survey based in Darwin. In late 2016, he joined TU Delft as a postdoc following which in June 2021 Pierre-Olivier became an assistant professor at TU Delft.
His research focuses on understanding and predicting structural heterogeneities (fractures, karsts and faults) in subsurface environments. This research combines descriptive, theoretical and quantitative approaches and range from outcrop characterisation, to geo-mechanics, to 3D static and dynamic modelling. Pierre-Olivier’s research serves applied cases and aim to advance the safe and responsible exploitation of rocks in the underground for a more sustainable future.
