Petroleum Geology of Ukraine: Historic and current perspective

Abstract
Ukraine has a long and often troubled history of prosperity and violence, being a Borderland between world powers throughout human history. We will discuss the various episodes in that history.

There are three major HC basins in the country. The most important and prolific is the Paleozoic rift basin, the Dniepr-Donets Basin onshore in the East of the country, with total discovered volumes around 1.6 Bbo and 60 Tcf of gas. The Carpatian Basin is a Cenozoic foredeep basin in the West of the country and the Black Sea Basin is a highly underexplored classical fold belt – deep water basin. Yet-to-Find studies revealed very major gas resources in the SE of the Dniepr-Donets Basin, mainly in unconventional traps, and in the Black Sea Basin. Exploration success would result in a major change in the European gas availability and potentially take over the European market.

Exploration had just started in full force when Russia illegally occupied those areas in 2014, escalating into a full invasion and the current ridiculous war against an independent and proud country. We will discuss Ukraine’s history, the petroleum systems, both geological and political and the current war time situation in the country.

About the presenter

Roland is a passionate exploration geologist with a doctoral degree in Sedimentology and Exploration Geophysics from Utrecht University, The Netherlands. Roland had a successful career of 37 years, spanning exploration, new ventures, commercial and related roles. He worked and lived in 11 different countries on five continents and has worked basins all over the world. The first 30 years were with Shell International, followed by a role as Vice President Exploration with Mubadala Petroleum and Asset Manager Exploration and Development at the State Oil Company of Suriname, South America.

Roland managed the country entry of Shell in Ukraine and later became Technical Director (and deputy GM) of the Joint Venture company of Shell and the Ukrainian National Oil Company Naftogaz Ukrainyi, living and working in Kyiv. In 2005 he received the award of the Academy of Science of Ukraine as Scientist of the year and in 2007 the Medal of Merit Grade 1 from the Association of Ukrainian Geologists (associated with AAPG).
