Monthly Lecture – 15th of October 2026

Aart-Peter van den Berg van Saparoea will be speaking about getting more from the GEODE Atlas through customisation: a Jurassic Play case study

Abstract

The GEODE Jurassic 2025 Atlas contains a wealth of publicly available data compiled in ready-to-use maps, but the real value lies in going beyond the standard maps. This presentation demonstrates how GEODE data can be downloaded, combined with additional (proprietary) data, and customised to address specific exploration questions. Using the Ryazanian (TMS-3) play in the Terschelling Basin as an example, I illustrate a workflow that moves from regional play screening to the evaluation of individual play elements and exploration risk. The resulting products provide additional insight into exploration history, remaining prospectivity, and the relative importance of charge, migration, seal, and reservoir quality. The aim is to present the GEODE Atlas as a flexible dataset that can be adapted to individual workflows, providing valuable regional context for prospect ranking, play evaluation, and exploration decision-making.

About the speaker:

Aart-Peter van den Berg van Saparoea is a Senior Geoscientist at EBN with over 20 years of experience in exploration, prospect evaluation, and regional subsurface studies. A geologist by background, he specialises in clastic sedimentology, reservoir characterisation, play-based exploration, and risk and uncertainty analysis. His work focuses on integrating geological, geophysical, and well data to support exploration decision-making and resource assessments. He has experience in a wide range of basins, including the North Sea, West of Shetland, Norway, Greenland, West Africa, the Black Sea, and the Caspian region. In addition to his geoscience expertise, he has a strong interest in data analysis, GIS, programming, and the practical use of large subsurface datasets such as the GEODE Atlas to improve play screening and prospect evaluation.
