Francesco Pizzocolo (TNO/GSEU) will talk about:
From Data to Decisions: How the GeoEnergy Atlas Supports Europe’s Energy Goals
Abstract
The Pan-European Online Atlas of Sustainable Geo-Energy Capacities (SGC) is one of the flagship product of the Geological Service for Europe project (https://www.geologicalservice.eu/) and one of the foundation of the future GSE. The Atlas aims to provide harmonized and standardized data on CO₂ storage potential, deep and shallow geothermal and H2 underground storage across Europe. This initiative, developed under the Geological Service for Europe (GSEU), compiles data from 30 countries. The atlas will be a key resource for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders, enabling (geo)informed decision-making on several subsurface related activities.
For example, by leveraging Storage Readiness Levels (SRL) as a maturity indicator for CCS, the atlas ensures consistency between national and European datasets while incorporating new research.
This presentation will outline the progress of the atlas, its role in Europe’s decarbonization efforts, and upcoming developments, including its integration with JRC datasets and the phasing out of outdated databases.
About the presenter
Francesco Pizzocolo has a background in civil engineering and business administration. He has been working at TNO since 2013 (now as Senior Project Manager). Together with the EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) team, he coordinates the GSEU project, which provides access to subsurface data, information, and knowledge to accelerate the green transition. Before his involvement with GSEU, he led the Materials for Geo Energy group at TNO Eindhoven and, in the early stages of his TNO career, worked as a Geomechanics Scientist in Utrecht.
Outside of work, Francesco loves hiking/climbing and lindy-hoping and he has been coaching basketball since the age of 16, a passion that still takes up much of his free time.
