Fieldtrip to the Pyrenean foothills 2024

This year’s PGK International Fieldtrip will lead us to the South Pyrenean Foreland and Ebro Basins. Both areas feature a longstanding tradition of research into the interplay of sedimentary basin fill and syn-sedimentary compressional plate tectonics, and are the venue of multiple fieldtrips for academia and energy companies. Focus of the fieldtrip will be on (1) the reservoir sedimentology of Eocene fluvial, estuarine, and deep-marine clastic sediments, some of which exposed in so-called worldclass outcrops, (2) the expression of the climate-driven Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) on the development of a shallow-water carbonate platform, and (3) the influence of syn-sedimentary thrust-tectonic movements on sediment-routing (‘piggy-back basin’ development). All outcrops are set in a beautiful scenery adorned with a rich culture of medieval villages, some of which will be visited during the trip.

The fieldtrip will take place from Wednesday 2 Oct. to Sunday 6 Oct. 2024. Start and finish are at Barcelona airport (BCN). The participants are to make own travel arrangements to BCN. Transport during the fieldtrip will be by comfortable bus with an experienced driver, and lodging will be in hotels in La Puebla de Roda and Grañen (two nights each). Breakfast and dinner will be in the hotels, and we will take picknick lunches into the field. Some outcrops are close to the bus, but we envisage some hikes in hilly terrain, which will be of low to medium-grade difficulty.
