PGK 2025 – Geological Excursion to Morocco

Triassic Continental Rift Facies and Atlantic Passive Margin Petroleum Systems, Morocco

This year’s PGK Autumn Fieldtrip will lead us to the spectacular geology of the High Atlas, Argana and Essaouira basins, examining the Central Atlantic Margin sequence from Paleozoic basement, Triassic continental rift sequences to Jurassic passive margin carbonates and Early Cretaceous paralic deposits, the feeder systems to potential offshore deepwater reservoirs. Evaluate the tectono-stratigraphic framework, reservoir characterization, source to sink (deepwater clastic delivery) and depositional system evolution, looking at reservoir, source, seal trapping and timing. Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous petroleum systems. Analogue for petroleum systems offshore Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia and Nova Scotia / US conjugate margin. Not to forget, sampling Moroccan cuisine and life while visiting Marrakech, Agadir, Immouzeur and Taghazout.

This six-day fieldtrip will take place from 21.00 Tuesday evening 9th to 18.00 Sunday evening 14th September 2025. Start and finish are at Marrakech airport. The participants are to make own travel and (if required) visa arrangements to Marrakech airport. Transport during the fieldtrip will be by comfortable air-conditioned Mercedes Sprinter Coaches with an experienced driver, and lodging will be in 3 Star hotels. Some outcrops are close to the bus, but we envisage some hikes in hilly terrain, which will be of low to medium-grade difficulty.

People younger than 30 years are eligible for a Young Professional discount, the amount will be determined later based on the number of applicants for the discount.
