PGK 2026 – Two Day Excursion To The Maastrichtian Chalk

13th to 14th June 2026
Only for PGK members!
Field trip leader: Henk Koster + local guides
Excursion fee: shared rooms €225 p.p., single room €295 p.p
€50 discount for Young Professionals (<30 years old)

Coming 13th and 14th of June, the PGK will travel to the sun-laden Maastricht in the south of the Netherlands. During this trip, Henk Koster and local guides will take us back in time to the subtropical Late Cretaceous during which the Maastrichtian Chalk Group (ENCI Quarry) was deposited. Furthermore, we will observe the K/Pg boundary marking the end of the age of the dinosaurs (Geulhemmer Quarry). Apart from geological site visits, we will also stop by a chalk quarry including historical artwork (Jezuïtenberg) and a prehistoric flint mine.

This two-day excursion will take place from 9.00 Saturday morning the 13th of June to 20.00 Sunday the 14th of June 2026, both starting and ending in Utrecht. Transport during the fieldtrip will be by coach, and the overnight stay at the boat hotel in the centre of Maastricht is included. Drinks and dinner on Saturday evening are included, as well as breakfast, lunch and snacks on Sunday. Participants are expected to bring their own breakfast/lunch for Saturday the 13th of June. Some locations may require an easy/moderate (up to 1 hour) walk. In case Maastricht is less sun-laden than it was during the Late Cretaceous, the coach will transport us between stops instead.

We look forward to you joining us on this excursion, for questions please contact excursions@pgknet.nl
