This year, the PGK invites you to join an unforgettable field trip to one of the world’s geolgical destinations: Cyprus. Over the course of five days, we will explore a remarkably complete ophiolite sequence, offering a rare opportunity to walk through the upper mantle and a full section of the former Tethys Ocean lithosphere. Expect an immersive geological experience, including serpentinized mantle rocks, the Moho, pillow lavas, and deep-marine sediments. We will also examine striking examples of deformation, such as a major strike-slip fault, and visit Europe’s largest former asbestos quarry. Beyond geology, the trip offers a rich cultural dimension, with visits to archaeological sites that highlight Cyprus’s diverse and fascinating history.

During this field trip, we will stay in two locations: near Argos and Paphos. Transport around the island during our field trip will be conducted by coach. The trip will take place entirely on the European-administered side of Cyprus. You can expect a sun-filled, inspiring week combining world-class geology, cultural highlights, warm Mediterranean waters, and excellent local cuisine.
Pricing includes (1) accommodation in Cyprus, including breakfast, (field)lunch, and dinner every day, and (2) local transport during the trip.
Flights are not included and must be arranged individually. Preferred flight options from Amsterdam to Cyprus will be provided when booking. Young geologists below the age of 30 years are eligible for a Young Professional discount of €150.
Disclaimer: Given the current situation in the Middle East, we will continuously monitor whether the field trip can proceed safely. We will follow the travel advice issued by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (https://www.nederlandwereldwijd.nl/reisadvies/cyprus). If the travel advice remains green or yellow, the field trip will proceed as planned. If the travel advice turns orange or red before 1 June 2026, we will make every effort to offer participants an alternative field trip to South Wales. In that case, participants will be informed in a timely manner about available options and any financial implications.
