PGK 2025 – Geological Excursion to Annot Basin, French Alps

Stratigraphic Architecture of Basin Axes and Margins in Confined Settings

This year’s PGK Spring Fieldtrip will focus on the sedimentary and structural geology Eocene-Oligocene Annot Basin. This five-day excursion is to examine sand-rich slope deposits within a series of structurally confined sub-basins. Several world-class exposures of deepwater systems will be visited, exhibiting various stratigraphic features including channels, channel complexes, lobes, mass transport complexes and mud volcanoes, see detailed summary below. Another highlight of the excursion is some of the gastronomical and cultural heritage of the Alpes Maritimes and Haute Provence: For instance we will have dinner in the old town of Nice as the start of the excursion and visit the fortress museum and town of Colmars.

The fieldtrip will take place from 18.00 Wednesday 11th to 17.00 Sunday 15th June 2025, start and finish are at Nice Airport. The participants need are to make their own travel arrangements to Nice Airport. Transport during the fieldtrip will be by minibus. Access to some outcrops requires good physical condition, we will be hiking upslope for approximately 2.5 hour with viewing stops (600 meters height difference) and back down later on the day.

Please notice, different setup than normally for single and double rooms
We will sleep in two different locations during the excursion, the room set up is as follows:
• Hotel in Nice (first night):Normal set up with 3 single rooms and the 20 doubles are available.
• Hotel Colmars les Alpes (last 3 nights): There are 8 apartments with different configurations, where facilities are shared with maximum 3-4 people. In the apartments there are 3 single rooms with shared facilities and a total of 20 shared beds, which can be as either 2 beds in a double room or a single bed in the living room of the apartment. If you book a single room, you will have a single room with shared facilities. If you book a shared room, you are sharing your room with someone or are in the living room and all are sharing the facilities with maximum 3-4 people in one apartment.
Of course we will try to make groups that fit well for this set up.

People younger than 30 years are eligible for a Young Professional discount, the amount will be determined later based on the number of applicants for the discount.
